Ghee plays a very important role in every Indian kitchen since our old Indian Tradition. Ghee is not only used in the kitchen but also in yagnya because it has the potency to eat up all the toxicity of environment, mind and body. In fact, the Ghee is compared with amrita i.e the nectar in ayurveda.

I would like to highlight some point, what makes it so special?

  • It consists of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), therefore they promote burning of the stubborn fat from the unwanted area like abdomen, thighs, arms.
  • It also promotes healthy bacteria in the gut, it tones up the muscles of the heart,  uterus.
  • It sharpens the intellect.
  • Just as when Ghee is poured in the yagyna it increases the flame, in the same way when ghee is added to the food it not only increases the taste of the food but it also kindles the digestive fire.

GHEE BENEFITS

Best for cooking

Ghee is one of the best oils for cooking. It stimulates digestive fire (or Agni) according to Ayurveda. It has a very high smoke point (482 °F) and its chemical structure does not change at high heat. When you cook with desi ghee, there is no hissing, popping or splattering. It produces sweet aroma when heated. You use less than half of other oils and it enhances the taste of food.

Sattvic Food

Ghee is considered as a sattvic food in Ayurveda. Cow milk has the essence of the grass & plants, and cow ghee possesses the essence of cow milk.

Food for Optimum Health

Ghee is a nutrient dense food and contains healthy fat soluble vitamins which helps in the absorption of nutrients in foods and are essential for good health.

No Harmful Trans Fats

Cow ghee does not contain harmful trans fats or hydrogenated oils which can cause heart disease and many other serious health problems.

Apart from rejuvenating body, desi ghee also helps detoxify our mind. Ayurveda suggests that Ghee with some herbs do magic in healing mental disorder conditions due to Veta and as a key ingredient, it’s sweet taste nourishes the nerve tissue and brain.

Desi Ghee with brahmi herb is prescribed in the fifth month of pregnancy for mental development of consciousness and intellect. According to Ayurvedicyogi.com “The newborn is also fed honey and ghee to stimulate intellect and ojas (the essence of all tissues) in an important ritual.”

Beyond maintaining a healthy mind, ghee is also prescribed for anxiety, depression, dementia, insanity, epilepsy and other disorders of consciousness. It is believed in Ayurveda that ghee older than one year is a great remedy for the healing mind.

Disappointedly, most studies focus on the herbs which are added to the ghee but ghee itself is a powerful brain tonic. According to Ayurvedicyogi.com “One study does look at ghee’s inherent properties for treating Alzheimer’s via its insertion in the nose (Madhavikutty 2000)”. Such Nasya therapy is part of Panchakarma, and is a natural route for delivering rejuvenating substances to the brain. Beyond treating serious mental disorders ghee can be used to pacify mild anxiety (due to aggravated Vata). This is done by dipping a clean finger in ghee and inserting into each nostril, lubricating the nasal passage with gentle massage.
